Gentilly District Real Estate
Gentilly was named for a town in the Department of Seine, France. In
the 18th century Gentilly functioned as a small village a "half
league" from New Orleans. Built at first along the Gentilly Ridge,
the area began expanding in the 1920's. The suburb was one of the first
areas the Creoles moved into after leaving the French Quarter-Esplanade
area. It is now a mixture of diverse neighborhoods, low sprawling post-World
War II houses, nurseries, one university (Dillard) and one Seminary
(Baptist Theological).
